Mixed media art combines a variety of materials—like paper, fabric, thread, and found objects—to create something layered, textured, and unique. I specialize in using recycled and repurposed items: think maps from old travels, packaging paper, security envelopes, and even buttons or book pages from local thrift shops. Every piece has a story. For me, mixed media is about transformation—turning the everyday into the extraordinary.

I teach in-person classes and workshops in community reuse spaces, libraries, and museums around the Washington DC area. My offerings range from beginner-friendly collage and handmade journals to more advanced bookbinding and assemblage techniques. Each session is designed to help you relax, play, and reconnect with your creativity—no experience needed.

Yes! I offer online classes where you can join from anywhere. These sessions are great if you're looking to learn at your own pace or can’t make it in person. You’ll get a materials list ahead of time, and most classes are recorded so you can revisit the lessons whenever it suits you. Whether you're a total beginner or returning to art after a break, you'll feel right at home.

For in-person classes, I provide most of the materials—especially the fun bits I’ve sourced from my collection of vintage, recycled, and found treasures. You’re always welcome to bring your own items (like photos, paper scraps, or fabrics) to personalize your piece. For online classes, I’ll email a supply list ahead of time with suggested substitutions and affordable options using what you may already have.

Classes are held at community reuse centers, local libraries, and creative spaces in and around Washington DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia. I also occasionally teach at pop-up events, museums, and nonprofit programs. Follow me on Instagram @NerissaAlfordDesigns or join my email list to get first dibs on upcoming workshops.

Absolutely! I love working with small groups, whether it’s for a birthday, girls’ night, military spouse gathering, or corporate team-building. Private workshops can be customized to your space, time, and interests. Just reach out via the Contact Page or email me, and we’ll make some creative magic together.
